I have been told quite often that I'm unique when thinking about blogging. Partially because I'm a person who doesn't believe everyone should blog and secondly because I don't believe that blogging content needs to be something you write.
Let's look at the second part first: A blog is not something you need to write. Often qualified people with unique perspectives stop writing because they feel they have nothing to say. If we break the idea of a blog down into it's simple thoughts we find distinct characteristics:
- Date Organized - Blogs have entries stored by a date/time stamp to show when the "latest entry" was created
- Date Catalogued - Blogs are archived by date so they can be searched and found again
- Categorized Information - Blogs have the ability to be grouped by "categories", either through categorized entries or user defined tags
- Dynamically Generated - Blogs are created on the fly by the owner of the blog.
Just by looking at the "characteristics" of the blog you will notice no where in the characteristics does it say a blog has to be written. If we look at these simple ideas we can find other ways to create captivating blogs.
Blog entries can consist of Grouping of Powerful Websites, Showcase of New Products, or even Quick Sale Items. A blog can be created by a blog writer, an RSS feed aggregator or Blog Roll Importer. You can have a blog that contains nothing more than aggregation of other blogs together. We just have to remember the simple traits of our blog.
Secondly (the first part): Not everyone should write a blog. There are people out in the world who do not have a propendency to writing. Some people in their writing do more damage to their brand (image) then if they were to not write anything in the first place. If this is the case for you do not feel pressure to create a blog where you are writing entries. This isn't to say you shouldn't have a blog. Remember a blog is not something that you need to write. If you pull in ideas and thoughts from other places your blog can be an aggregation of important information. You need to figure out what your clients and customers are interested in seeing from you.
Remember: A blog is nothing more than a technical marketing trick. Utilize your time and energy to make the marketing efforts the strongest you need. It is important and will make you a more valuable presence. Plus ... it does become fun when you take the pressure off of your words. :)
